Pregnancy & Oral Health
Why is oral health especially important during pregnancy?
Practicing good oral hygiene during pregnancy is a must! Gingivitis occurs more often during pregnancy due to the increased level of hormones, which affects the way the gums react to irritants in plaque. About 60% of pregnant women develop gingivitis.
Research conducted in patients with periodontitis while pregnant suggests that bacteria found in plaque and inflammatory proteins can enter the bloodstream and cause premature, low birth weight babies. In addition, children of mothers with untreated cavities and tooth loss are 3 times more likely to have cavities as a child.
Eat healthy and avoid sugary foods as much as possible. Remember to brush your teeth and gums at least twice daily during pregnancy and postpartum. Stay on top of flossing once a day as well.
Don’t skip your dental checkup appointment simply because you’re pregnant. Now more than any other time, regular exams are important.
When you visit our dental office during pregnancy, be sure to let Dr. Nation and her team know that you are expecting. Your dental team may want to contact your obstetrician to discuss your dental treatment.
