Children & Dental Visits

Early Care is Recommended

Not sure when you should take your child to the dentist for the first time? The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that the first dental visit occur within the first six months after a baby’s first tooth appears, but no later than the child’s first birthday.

Pro tip: Schedule your child’s dental appointment in the morning when they are rested and more cooperative.

Benefits to Scheduling Dental Visits Early

Dr. Nation and her team can show you how to clean your child’s teeth, discuss diet and fluoride needs, and recommend oral care products for your child. Think of these visits as well-check visits for your little one, just in the oral sense.

If your child is a toddler, Dr. Nation will gently examine his/her teeth and gums, checking for decay and other issues like prolonged thumb sucking or pacifier/bottle use.

In order to prevent cavities, Dr. Nation may also recommend a fluoride treatment or dental sealant. Dental sealants are simply a coating that protects the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Dr. Nation will let you know if these treatments are right for your child.

Tooth Decay in Children

Tooth decay can occur as soon as your child’s first tooth erupts. Some parents wonder why they should be concerned about decay in baby teeth since they are not permanent teeth. Tooth decay in baby teeth, also known as primary teeth, could mean a higher risk of decay in permanent teeth. If decay is severe, it can affect the child’s overall health.

Tips to Avoid Tooth Decay

    • Babies should not be given a bottle to be put to bed. If your baby falls asleep with the bottle in his/her mouth, the liquid can pool around the teeth.
    • Children who are exposed to sugar often are at higher risk for decay. They should not be allowed to constantly sip on sugary drinks or snack on sugary foods.
    • Start practicing good oral hygiene early, brushing twice a day. Making this a habit early in life can lead to good oral hygiene in adulthood.
