Is your child experiencing behavioral, developmental, or academic problems?
These problems could be associated with Childhood Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is caused by an obstruction in the airway during sleep (such as enlarged tonsils and adenoids). When a child is sleeping the soft tissue in the back of their throat is most relaxed causing difficulty in breathing.
Signs and Symptoms
-
- Snoring
- Mouth breathing
- Restless sleep
- Sleeping in odd positions
- School problems
- Hyperactive behavior
- Bed-wetting
If you suspect your child has obstructive sleep apnea, contact your child’s pediatrician.
Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent complications that can affect children’s growth, cognitive development and behavior. Make an appointment with your child’s health care professional if your child wakes up in the morning feeling tired and has behavioral problems on a regular basis.
